Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law

Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law
By: Shirelle Phelps(Editor)
ISBN-10: 078765759X
ISBN-13: 9780787657598
Publisher: Thomson Gale (2002-11)
Hardcover: 1259 Pages
Format: PDF

Written in direct, informal language, this encyclopedia succeeds in explaining the law to laypeople. Divided into two volumes, it provides short (2000- to 5000-word) essays in 24 alphabetically arranged subject areas (e.g., automobiles, civil rights, consumer issues, estate planning, First Amendment issues, retirement, and taxes). The text starts with an overview of the American legal system, explaining the various types of laws and tribunals. The essays in the first section, on the Americans with Disabilities Act, contain a short overview of the law, using boldface for terms (e.g., discrimination) defined in the glossary. Essays in other sections cover issues ranging from buying and selling real estate to traveling with children to elder abuse. Each essay includes a list of additional resources and organizations, including numerous web sites. The references vary widely, with some essays directing readers to law review articles and academic texts and others citing popular, self-help law books. In future editions, it would help if the editor provided a list of the best resources or specific advice on where a reader wanting "how to" advice should go. It would also help if the glossary cited the pages on which the terms are cited. In comparison, Nolo's Encyclopedia of Everyday Law, 3d ed., is more practical for consumer use. However, it is also less scholarly than the Gale volumes and less suitable for research. Ultimately, Gale has given readers a useful treatise. Recommended for larger collections.-Harry Charles, Attorney at Law, St. Louis Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Textpattern is a powerful, PHP-based content management system that allows you to
build pretty much any kind of data-driven website quickly and easily. It is very
popular among designers and developers alike, and has an active community of users.
Sound good? Well, you're in luckthe book you're holding now shows you how to use
every aspect of Textpattern to a professional standard. Textpattern (and this book)
appeals to two main groups of people: Firstly, the web designer who has mastered
the fundamentals of XHTML and CSS and wants to create sites that have fresh and
dynamically changing information, but is not familiar with server-side coding and
databases. Never fearTextpattern enables you to integrate your XHTML knowledge,
inserting dynamic aspects into your already solid site design. Secondly, PHP
developers who are looking for a content management system upon which to build
additional functionality and want a hand with the design aspects of their site.

Again, Textpattern fills in those holes. The book leaves no stone unturned. It
starts by introducing you to Textpattern and guiding you through its very simple
installation process. After the core features of the administrative interface
are explored, the book dives into building sites with TXP, using CSS, articles,
forms, pages, and more to create fully customized templates. Development follows
next, looking at installing plugins and building your own custom plugins to
further enhance your Textpattern-based site. The book concludes with several
case studies to provide ideas and inspiration, including a weblog, an e-commerce
site, and an online review directory.

In this book you will:

templating language.
* Learn to use Textpattern to build e-commerce websites, including

functionality and features to uniquely suit the needs of your website.
