Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness (1966) [VIDEO]

"Try a Little Tenderness" is a song written by "Irving King" (James Campbell and Reginald Connelly) and Harry M. Woods, and recorded separately by both Ruth Etting and Bing Crosby in 1933. Subsequent recordings were made by such recording artists as Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, Frankie Laine, Percy Sledge, Al Jarreau and Etta James. Also, Tina Turner sang it as a part of her 1999/2000 Twenty Four Seven Tour in a duet with John Miles. The Otis Redding version: A popular version in an entirely new form was recorded by Otis Redding in 1966. Redding's recording features a slow soulful opening that eventually builds into a frenetic R&B conclusion. It has been named on a number of "best songs of all time" lists, including those from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It is in the 204th position on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The story behind Otis' version is the following: First, Aretha Franklin is the first black artist to cover the song in 1962 (in "The Tender, The Moving, The Swinging Aretha Franklin", Columbia). After hearing it, Sam Cooke adds it to his live shows, as can be heard on his live LP "At the Copa" (1964). In Cooke's version, only two verses are included, as part of a medley (with "For sentimental reasons" and "You send me"). This is the only version that Otis Redding knew, which is why he only sings those two verses. File-Size: 43,44 MB Download

1957: When Skiffle Was King - VA (2008)

The year was 1957. As Rock N Roll conquered America, in Britain Skiffle was king. Originating from the folk and trad jazz clubs the exponents of skiffle used improvised instruments such as the washboard, tea chest bass, kazoo, cigar-box fiddle, musical saw, comb and paper, and so forth, as well as more conventional instruments such as acoustic guitar and banjo. This was wild music, British style, and it's greatest star Lonnie Donegan became an icon to the new post war generation. * All original recordings digitally remastered. * Definitive guide to skiffle featuring no less than 13 top ten hits. 01. Wayne Newton - The Best of Wayne Newton (1967)

How about some early Wayne Newton tonight? I LOVE Wayne Newton - especially his early stuff, before his voice changed. I like his singing now, too, but being the nostalgic that I am, I prefer listening to him when he was just a young lad. (BTW, how old was he when his voice finally changed?) Well, by 1967, Wayne had already had several hits and had recorded several albums, so this is his first "greatest hits" album. It's great because it's got all the early favorites, including his signature song "Danke Schoen". (Of course, every time I hear this song, I think of Ferris Bueller.) I love how the liner notes describe Wayne as "an apple-cheeked young fellow with a big, wide grin". What a great description! And, you gotta love the photo on the album cover - the hand up by his face and the perfectly coiffed hair! And Wayne still has the perfectly coiffed hair! I'm one of the few people on this earth who has yet to go to Las Vegas, but when I do go, I definitely plan to go see Wayne! I've heard he puts on the best show. But, for now, I will just have to listen to "the great songs by the great young singer known as MR. EXCITEMENT!" Track listing for The Best of Wayne Newton (1967): Side 1: 1. Danke Schoen 2. Bill Bailey 3. Laura Lee 4. I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover 5. After the Laughter 6. Wiederseh'n Side 2: 1. Summer Wind 2. Days of Wine and Roses 3. Apple Blossom Time 4. Games That Lovers Play 5. You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You Download
