Woman fined ?16,000 for game file sharing

A COMPUTER game fan has been ordered to pay more than £16,000 after being found guilty of sharing games over the internet.

The woman, who has not been identified, had made the game, Dream Pinball 3D, available to fellow players on file-sharing websites. It costs about £16 in stores.

She was told to pay £6,086 damages, plus costs of £10,000, to Topware Interactive, the maker of the game.

'This is significant for people who sit in their darkened rooms and think they can act with impunity,' said internet law expert Leigh Ellis, of Gillhams Lawyers.

'There's no right to protection of their details when they're infringing the law.'

He said the damages were a calculation of how many copies were downloaded, multiplied by the retail price. Mr Ellis warned that other people who helped distribute copies of games could face similar hefty payouts.

Last month, Topware, represented by law firm Davenport Lyons, won a court fight against four people, including the woman, who illegally shared Dream Pinball 3D.

The court in London also obtained 1,000 more names from internet service providers. David Gore, a partner at Davenport Lyons, said: 'The damages and costs ordered by the court are significant and should act as a deterrent.'
