Vista SP1 to arrive Tuesday

SEATTLE - A major package of updates and security fixes for Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Vista operating system will be available for download Tuesday, according to Amazon.com Inc.'s Web site.

The retailer is selling copies of Vista without the service pack and advising customers that they can download the free SP1 upgrade starting Tuesday.

Amazon is also taking pre-orders for boxed copies of Windows Vista Service Pack 1, which it said it will start shipping Wednesday.

In an e-mailed statement, Microsoft said it is on track to release SP1 in mid-March. The software maker acknowledged Amazon's claim that the upgrade would be available Tuesday online, but didn't confirm the date.

Microsoft previously announced plans to post SP1 to its Windows Update site and to its download center in mid-March, then push out the upgrades in mid-April to computer users who have set their PCs to receive automatic updates.

Many of the fixes in Vista SP1 have already been released as part of regular monthly updates in the year since the operating system went on sale to consumers. Microsoft has said SP1 improves Vista's reliability, security and performance. Some early testers of the service pack have noticed improvement in performance when copying files over a network and playing video games that weren't designed for Vista.

So far, the software maker has determined that only a handful of programs will break down in some way after SP1 is installed.

Microsoft said SP1 will block several applications from running for "reliability reasons." The list includes BitDefender Antivirus and Internet Security, version 10; Fujitsu's Shock Sensor hard drive protection for rugged laptops; two versions of Jiangmin KV Antivirus software and Check Point Technologies' Zone Alarm Security Suite.

The company said a few programs won't run on SP1, such as Web application design program Iron Speed Designer, while others will stop working well, like The New York Times Reader application.

Unless your Vista is broken don't install this crap! Don't believe the hype! I have tried the RTM final release of SP1 and it might speed up copy & Paste but it slows down just about everything else.

After you install it your PC seems to never stop working at startup and it takes a good 5 minitues before you can actually start working without everything being slowed down to a crawl. To be honest, other than for fixing copy & Paste I cannot see that it does anything else that has any good effects. Everything it fixes seems to be in the system so it is hidden.

Also watch out for KB940510: This little update scans your PC for vista activation BIOS hacks & Timer Cracks. At the moment if it finds a patch it will only display a Nag screen warning that your PC isn't genuine but that is going to change very soon,so who knows what will happen to you poor people who have gone over to the dark side and run illegal copies.

A better alternative is to only update the Hotfixes you need from the and leave this HUGE pile of dogs Vomit called SP1 to the stooges. You wait & see it may fix 1 or 2 problems but SP1 will cause even more troubles for vista than it had before.

For some reason this was edited out of the last paragraph of my above coment:

A better alternative is to only update the Hotfixes you need from the HotFix Share.net,Google it

(VISTA SP1 IS MORE PROBLEM WHY) I told you WHY in my post.

I have a legal copy of Vista "worst luck" which I paid $200 Australian for at a discount (ripped off). So I had no problems with the KB940510 hot fix on my System, but I had major performance issues with SP1.

My PC runs at a 5.9 on the Windows experience index which means it it right at the top of the list for Vista performance. It is fast and reliable but It did have bugs, like slow copy & Paste, slow initial Internet connection, and other silly little problems like those.

But when I installed SP1 it changed it from a slick machine into a slow PC and I had none of the programs that Microsoft list as being problems. I also got my first Blue Screen of Death,3 of them actually, once when I tried to use my LG DVD and twice when I used Media Player.

I unistalled SP1 and my PC was back to normal. So then I tracked down the seperate Hotfixes from Microsoft & the Hotfix Share and installed them seperatly and my PC still runs like a dream.

I think Microsoft's new Service Pack (SP1) needs another Service Pack to fix it!!!

@BongoKongo KB940510 will be the front end nullifier, but I am certain another zapper will be in there too, that either kicks in later, or senses KB940510 has not been implemented, so the lost pig will dial home and you can guess the rest ;)

...and sorry to hear that Service PranK 1 did not do it for you :(

@LUIS, we already have Speedy Gonzales batting for us in XP/2000/2003 amigo! WTF do we need Speedy Pissta for :? DX-10, Aero, and new credit card application? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL !!! :D

Hey Luis, it's had all the guts stripped from it man, what's the point of having a crippled Vista, that runs as fast as a fully bloated XP that has working drivers and apps?

For gaming yes, maybe, as long as gamers know how to load it up properly, but 512mb ram is just not enough for Vista, stripped or not. Your hard drive will eventually pay the price when the ram skimps out.

In fact Vista is THE best hard drive killer that I know of.

( Vista is THE best hard drive killer that I know of )

you are right Trollwatcher. I try vista on 3 seperate HDD and each time I install, all 3 HDD rattles & Grinds, but not with XP or Linux. I take it off Western Digital 250GB sata HDD because it make so much noise.

Plus I agree with BongKongo SP1 slow down my vista

Just another poin:

Did you know that hidden inside SP1 there is a RNG! or ( random number generator )

December 17, 2007

Dual_EC_DRBG Added to Windows Vista

Microsoft has added the random-number generator Dual_EC-DRBG to Windows Vista, as part of SP1. Yes, this is the same RNG that could have an NSA backdoor.

It has not been enabled by default, and my advice is to never enable it. Ever.

I should make this clear that the algorithm is available as a program call. It is not something that the user can enable or disable.

It can be activated secretly in a number of wasys, the most likely of which will be by using Microsoft Update. Microsoft can turn it on at any time they see fit to do it.
