I noted some scepticism last week when SP3 (RC) was posted. "It can't be real because it is not on the Microsh*t website" - was one comment. I can't blame people for thinking that, as the Redmond outfit deliberately sneaked it out in the shadow of the Vista SP1 release. No fanfare, no press release. And no wonder!!!!
It appears that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), runs Microsoft Corp.'s Office suite 10% faster than XP SP2, a performance testing software developer reported. According to the Office performance benchmarks, Windows XP SP3 is also considerably faster than Vista SP1Devil Mountain Software, which earlier in the week claimed Windows Vista SP1 was no faster than the original, repeated some of the same tests on the release candidate of Windows XP SP3. "We were pleasantly surprised to discover that Windows XP SP3 delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS," said Craig Barth, Devil Mountain's chief technology officer. "Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release, the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus," Barth said. "In fact, XP SP3 is shaping up to be a 'must-have' update". "None of this bodes well for Vista, which is now more than two times slower than the most current builds of XP," said Barth. While Microsoft have not commented about XP's performance (I wonder why!) it was quick to defended Vista SP1, claiming "it is still in the development phase". This begs the question: as XP SP3 is also still "under development", will the final release of SP3 be even better? And much as it clearly annoys the money grabbers at Redmond, no wonder XP is the operating system "that just won't die". Call me cynical, but is it not Microsoft that is actually keeping XP alive? Maybe it is looking for a face-saving way out of the "Big Vista Fiasco"

I agree and I must say that without you guys around and the good work from people in creating nice workable MS software without the crap I wouldn't be where I am today....TnX to you all.
I am now running XP Lite 2006 Corp. 295MB (Very Fast)
At my second boot I have Windows Vista Ultimate Edition x86 Oem - Permanently Actived Edition (Slow indeed and anoying sometimes)
Still wonna test XP_PERFORMANCE_EDITION_SEPT_ENG, XPGAMEREd
and Windows.TinyVista.Unattended.Activated.CD..
Can't wait till SP3 if it is as good as they say.
Considering that Microslop doesn't plan to release XP SP3 'til sometime later into 08, this release leaves me and many others, I'm sure, wondering just how stable and safe this is. It's not an official release, therefore I would tend to leave it alone until MS finally tweaks it, to the best of it's ability, if that is possible, before messing with it.
It's a known fact in the IT world that Vista is crap, through and through and nobody in his right mind, IT Professionals included should/would ever touch it. The rumors have it that it's the worst release of Windows ever, at par with WIN SE, so that says a lot about that excuse for a O/S!!
Use XP SP3 at your own risk, I say!
Thanks for the feedback folks. I must admit I am well pleased with SP3 (RC) and can't imagine what needs tweaking. All the usual bombs to make it fall over have failed (so far).
Regarding the full release, I feel it is being held back for 'political' reasons. If they finalise it before making the slightest improvement to Vista, they can kiss any more corporate and OEM sales (the ones that make most dosh for Microsh*t) goodbye. The backroom boys at Redmond must be well and truely burning the midnight oil to prevent that happening.
The problem is that M$ have already admitted Vista is effectively a stopgap OS in the ilk of ME, and the coporate world will not want to invest in an upgrade (joke) that will soon be obsolete, and will be quite happy to limp along with a revived XP for another year or two.
