Canadian Fairy Tales

Canadian Fairy Tales PDF S.B. Gundy; Toronto (1922) The fairy tale makes universal appeal because it deals with the elemental in our natures that is the same in every age and in every race. In the Canadian tales which are gathered from Indian sources, we find the same types of characters and scenes of adventure that we do in the tales of the German forests, of Scandinavia, England or France. The tales in this collection have been gathered in various parts of Canada. They are not the product of the writer's imagination; they are the common possession of the "folk." Many of them are still reverently believed by the Canadian Indians, and all are still told with seriousness around camp-fires in forests and on plains, upon the sea and by cottage hearths. The dress in which they now appear may be new, but the skeleton of each story has been left unchanged. Download

Indian Fairy Tales

Indian Fairy Tales D. Nutt: London (1892) PDF Indian fairy tales - edited by Joseph Jacobs, illustrated by J. D. Batten From the extreme West, we go to the extreme East. From the soft rain and green turf of Gaeldom, we seek the garish sun and arid soil of the Hindoo. In the Land of Ire, the belief in fairies, gnomes, ogres and monsters is all but dead; in the Land of Ind it still flourishes in all the vigour of animism. Download

Japanese Fairy Tales

Japanese Fairy Tales PDF English Japanese Fairy Tales compiled by Yei Theodora Ozaki; profusely illustrated by Japanese artists This is a collection of 22 charming Japanese fairy tales, originally published in 1905, selected and translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki. Included are legends and fairy tales about peasants and kings, god and bad forces, princesses, animals, the sea, and the sky. "This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk - lore. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Mr. Y. Yasuoka, Miss Fusa Okamoto, my brother Nobumori Ozaki, Dr. Yoshihiro Takaki, and Miss Kameko Yamao, who have helped me with translations. The story which I have named "The Story of the Man who did not Wish to Die" is taken from a little book written a hundred years ago by one Shinsui Tamenaga. It is named Chosei Furo, or "Longevity." "The Bamboo-cutter and the Moon-child" is taken from the classic " Taketari Monogatari," and is not classed by the Japanese among their fairy tales, though it really belongs to this class of literature. The pictures were drawn by Mr. Kakuzo Fujiyama, a Tokio artist. In telling these stories in English I have followed my fancy in adding such touches of local color or description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West." -- From The Preface Download
