A very useful function of the Firefox browser is the ability to add new search engines to Firefox's search bar which (depending on the active theme) is usually positioned on the top right of the Firefox window.

A search engine for any site can be created and by default Google, Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay are usually there. I have added at least 10 to mine, including; Wikipedia, Chambers Dictionary, Google Maps, Google Exact Phrase, Last.fm, Torrentz, IMDb, Acronym Finder, and others.

I have written 9 'search plugins' for the Avaxsphere site, 1 for each of the principal categories; eBooks, Everywhere, Games, Graphics, Magazines, Misc, Music, Software, and Video.

NOTE: They all search 'by relevance', if people want I will add more to search 'by date' as well, send me a PM if you want this and, if there is sufficient demand, I will provide these as well.


Installation Instructions:

The .xml files, named below, are all in the RAR. Choose which ones you want to add, there is one for each search category and you can install just one, a few, or all nine (it matters not), and copy them to ONE of two places (but not both) as follows:

To install the searches for ALL Firefox users on your computer, copy the .xml files of the searches you want to add to your 'Program Files' Firefox search plugin folder. The default folder is shown here:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins\


OR... to install them for just one Firefox user install them in your Firefox user application data folder. The exact location depends on your operating system and personal settings, but if you didn't change it from the default, it will be located somewhere like:

Windows 2000/XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\searchplugins\

Vista:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\searchplugins\

NOTE: Sometimes there is a random letter/num sequence added after Mozilla. EG.

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\nxrt4t68u\Firefox\searchplugins\


The installation will only complete when you RESTART Firefox.

To unistall them simply move or delete the .xml files from whichever 'searchplugins' folder you put them in and then RESTART Firefix.


I will not be adding these search plugins to the Mozilla Firefox directory of search plugins, the nature of the Avaxsphere site would make it unwise to do so. Please do not add them yourself.
