History and the Supernatural in Medieval England
|

History and the Supernatural in Medieval England Cambridge University Press | Pages: 288 | 2008-02-04 | ISBN: 0521802555 | 4 MB
This is a fascinating study of religious culture in England from 1050 to 1250. Drawing on the wealth of material about religious belief and practice that survives in the chronicles, Carl Watkins explores accounts of signs, prophecies, astrology, magic, beliefs about death and the miraculous and demonic. He challenges some of the prevailing assumptions about religious belief, questioning in particular the attachment of many historians to terms such as 'clerical' and 'lay', 'popular' and 'elite', 'Christian' and 'pagan' as explanatory categories. The evidence of the chronicles is also set in its broader context through explorations of miracle collections, penitential manuals, exempla and sermons. The book traces shifts in the way the supernatural was conceptualized by learned writers and the ways in which broader patterns of belief evolved during this period. This original account sheds important new light on belief during a period in which the religious landscape was transformed.

Bipolar II Disorder: Modelling, Measuring and Managing
|

Bipolar II Disorder: Modelling, Measuring and Managing Cambridge University Press | Pages: 318 | 2008-03-03 | ISBN: 0521873142 | 3MB
Bipolar depression is now known to exist as a spectrum of disorders rather than a single disease entity. Bipolar II Disorder exists on this spectrum as a condition where the depressive episodes are as severe as in Bipolar I Disorder, but where the mood elevation states are not as extreme. This unexpected combination can lead to a failure to detect a condition thought to affect up to 6% of the population. This book reviews, for the first time, our knowledge of this debilitating disorder, covering its history, classification and neurobiology. In a unique section, fourteen internationally recognized experts debate management strategies, building to some consensus, and resulting in treatment guidelines where no such advice currently exists. It should be read by all health professionals managing mood disorders and will be informative to those wishing to learn more about the condition.

Stealing the Network: How to Own a Continent
|

Stealing the Network: How to Own a Continent Syngress; 1 edition (May 2004) | ISBN: 1931836051 | CHM File | 2.7 MB | 432 pages Unfortunately, the prospect of evil forces unleashing an all out cyber-terrorism attack on the civilized world is no longer just a bad dream. There are now forces at work with the motive and the means to cripple the Internet, arguably, all they need now is the opportunity. This work of fiction is written by some of the leading security and counter-terrorism experts in the world today, and it outlines a plot to "own the box" on a truly global scale by compromising an entire continent's network infrastructure. The authors bring to life a scary cast of characters and set them on a course of imminent cyber-attack, shedding light on some of the most lethal hacks yet imagined. In-the-know readers will recognize the technologies, scenarios, and threatened intrusions. The first book in the "Stealing the Network" series was called a "blockbuster" by Wired magazine, a "refreshing change from more traditional computer books" by Slashdot.org, and "an entertaining and informative look at the weapons and tactics employed by those who attack and defend digital systems" by Amazon.com. This follow-on book once again combines a set of fictional stories with real technology to show readers the danger that lurks in the shadows of the information security industry... Could hackers take over a continent?
