The Telecoms Trade War: The United States, the European Union and the World Trade Organization
|
|
Mark Naftel, Lawrence J. Spiwak “The Telecoms Trade War: The United States, the European Union and the World Trade Organization" Hart Pub | 2001-01 | ISBN: 1841130141 | 493 pages | PDF | 1,2 Mb The actions of many regulators and industry participants reveal a telecoms trade war that is dangerously close to spiraling out of hand. This book reviews U.S. and European competition and regulatory initiatives post-WTO and provide both a useful roadmap to today’s U.S., EU and WTO telecoms regulation and an examination of various case studies to illustrate their points. The authors discover that regulators on both sides of the Atlantic have eschewed innovative and indeed productive solutions to create a market structure conducive to long-term competitive rivalry. Instead, the authors demonstrate that current policies reveal a growing cynicism towards the maximisation of consumer welfare that will be difficult to remove.

Beyond Borders: Internationalisation of R&D and Policy Implications for Small Open Economics
|

Beyond Borders: Internationalisation of R&D and Policy Implications for Small Open Economics 440 pages | Elsevier Science | March 25, 2005 | ISBN: 0444519092 | 25 Mb
At the beginning of the twenty-first century it is common sense that science, technology and innovation will be of increasing importance to the well being of all. Nobody can turn a blind eye to the penetrating ways progress in communication technologies, new materials and biotechnology revolutionise our lives. Although the conversion of science and technology into marketable products that cover societal needs is largely a matter of the private sector, the public sector has its role to play. European integration and liberalisation promote the interaction of various actors in science and technology. Also the perceived arrears with the United States and Japan has prompted the European Union to step up their R&D spending to reach 3% of gross domestic product by 2010. Individual Member States have taken concrete measures to promote their R&D, and Belgium is one of them. But there is a long and bumpy way to go still because of the slow growth rate the economies are currently experiencing and the tied budgetary constraints policy makers are confronted with. In the face of this it has to be acknowledged that many differences exist between countries. Differences are part and parcel of the internationalisation process and, within it, small open economies are confronted with specific opportunities and problems of their own.
This volume aims at informing and stimulating the debate on policy issues relating to science, technology and innovation. For those not acquainted with the subject it offers an introduction to the pallet of issues that play a role in the current state of affairs. Others might find the guidelines to policy more instructive. It is by no means the final word on the subject.

Becoming a Conflict Competent Leader: How You and Your Organization Can Manage Conflict Effectively 240 pages | Jossey-Bass; 1 edition | October 27, 2006 | ISBN: 0787984701 | 0.6 Mb
"If workplace conflict is inevitable, becoming a conflict competent leader is one of the most valuable skill sets a leader can possess. Runde and Flanagan clearly lay out how destructive conflict can be prevented while fostering the kind of constructive debate and creative solutions which businesses need to thrive." —Joanne McCree, former vice president, human resources, IBM
"A great book! It is full of actionable insights to turn your organization's conflict from a cost to an asset." —Daniel Shapiro, Harvard Negotiation Project; coauthor, Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate

No self-help manual on handling conflict that I've ever seen addresses the basics like this book." —Kenneth Bradt, past president, Society of Consulting Psychologists
"Competency in managing conflict is perhaps the most under-recognized component of successful leadership. This book, once read, should remain on the shelf of every leader for handy reference." —Dan Dana, Mediation Training Institute International; author, Managing Differences
"Craig Runde and Tim Flanagan know conflict! Better yet, they are able to guide the reader through an understanding of its dynamics from onset to resolution, thereby helping all of us to become more 'active constructive' leaders." —Michael Katos, The Katos Group LLC
"Our personal professional development is a constant pursuit in our quest to be the best we can possibly be. Dealing with conflict is a given in any leadership position. The Second Twentieth Century: How the Information Revolution Shapes Business, States And Nations
|

Jean-Jacques Rosa “The Second Twentieth Century: How the Information Revolution Shapes Business, States And Nations" Hoover Institution Press | 2006-10-27 | ISBN: 0817947426 | 390 pages | PDF | 1,1 Mb The universal consequences of the revolution in information technology The worldwide wave of democratization and the nearly total disappearance of communism at the end of the twentieth century were major economic and political changes of our time. These earth-shaking changes lead us to raise the question, Why now? Why did these developments occur as they did, when they did? In this book, Jean-Jacques Rosa offers an analysis of the "grand cycle" in social organization of the twentieth-century. He shows how the transformation in communication and information technology has led to the downfall of twentieth-century political and corporate hierarchies and is a driving force behind today's democratic free-market trend. The author reveals the universal contemporary consequences, both good and bad, of the information technology revolution. He explains how it is bringing relentless corporation downsizing and shrinking bureaucratic government structures but will also continue to be a factor in the rise of terrorism and secessionist and regionalist movements around the world. Rosa also brings an important historical perspective to current developments, explaining why democracy was abandoned by nearly every country in the world between the 1920s and 1960s and why totalitarian regimes prospered in the 1950s but began to rapidly fall behind democracies in the 1980s. Jean-Jacques Rosa's detailed economic, organizational, and technical analysis presents a captivating insight into the history, politics, and ideology of corporations and nation-states at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Jean-Jacques Rosa is a professor of economics and finance at Institut d'Edtudes Politiques (Sciences Po, Paris) and dean of the MBA Sciences Po Program, which he launched there in 1993. He is a member of the Mont Pélerin Society, the American Economic Association, and the American Finance Association.

How Skeptics Do Ethics: A Brief History of the Late Modern Linguistic Turn

Aubrey Neal “How Skeptics Do Ethics: A Brief History of the Late Modern Linguistic Turn" University of Calgary Press | 2007-04-30 | ISBN: 1552382028 | 316 pages | PDF | 1,6 Mb Reader's review: The philosophy of skepticism is revealed in a survey which blends ethical issues with skepticism's foundations: perfect for college-level collections strong in either philosophical discourse or ethical foundations. Unique moral challenges come from living in the modern world - and modern ethics has not kept up with these challenges. Its very foundations translate at best inefficiently into concerns over politics, public service, and the global economy. College-level discussions on ethical foundations will find plenty to fuel analysis, here. Diane C. Donovan California Bookwatch

Molecular Magnetism
|

W. Peddie “Molecular Magnetism" Redgrove Press | 2007-03-15 | ISBN: 1406738522 | 156 pages | Djvu | 1,9 Mb MOLECULAR MAGNETISM BY W. PEDDIE, D. Sc., F. R. S. E. . HARRIS PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, DUNDEE UNIVERSITY OF ST. ANDREWS I believe that we have there in Webers representation the explanation of magnetism in solids. It is interesting to see all these things come out as they do. KELVIN LONDON EDWARD ARNOLD CO. 1929 All Rights Reserved TO MY WIFE iELPER AND COMRADE NOW AS EVER And this word, Yet once more, signifyeth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may icmain. If the vision tarry, wait for it, for it will come and it will not be late. Made and Printed in Great Britain by UNW1N BROTHERS LIMITED, LONDON AND WOKING PREFACE THE foundations of every one of the great branches of Natural Philosophy have been probed beyond the merely phenomenal or molar stage of their description. They are now treated, in large part at least, in the light of molecular or even sub-atomic ideas. Upon every one of them has been cast the illumination of the two great speculative modern expansions of the older physical theory. And, in turn, it lies with them, by appeal to the decision of experiment to discriminate amongst the various forms which these speculations may assume, and to lead to the recognition of their underlying compulsions, and so to the elimination of what is arbitrary in their formulations. Equally with all the other branches, the subject of Magnetism has shared in the general advance and the attention of investigators, theoretical and practical alike, is now, and is increasingly, turned upon it. Optics and Chemjptry in particular wait upon its developments. But, whereas all the other subjects have their representa tion amongst the honours courses in Universities, and their aids to study amongst the series of textbooks, this subject has lain hitherto outside these courses, possibly for the reason that no textbook has yet appeared. Indeed, until the recent publication of Stoners work, Magnetism and Atomic Structure, in Britain, and of Le Magnetisme in France, original papers were largely the only source of information available to the student. It is not the aim of this book to occupy also the ground taken by these works. It is rather to furnish a textbook which may, on the one hand, serve as an accompaniment to a short University course of lectures on the subject and, on the other, be of use as an introduction to these more detailed treatments. A very large bibliography, given by Stoner, will be advantageous to the student who desires to proceed further. And I trust that, with whatever aid or stimulus may be found vi MOLECULAR MAGNETISM herein, some students may be induced to adopt the subject as one in which they will become original investigators. My thanks are specially due to members of my staff for much voluntary aid to Dr. Forrest for reading all the chapters in manuscript, and for frequent helpful discussions to Dr. Winifred Smith for careful proof reading and drawing of all the diagrams and to Mr. Raymond Smart, M. A., for verification of formulae. I have also to thank Mr. G. N. Hunter, B. Sc., for carrying out troublesome calculations, and plotting several curves by their aid. W. PEDDIE. About Time: Narrative, Fiction and the Philosophy of Time
|
|
Mark Currie “About Time: Narrative, Fiction and the Philosophy of Time" Edinburgh University Press | 2007-01-15 | ISBN: 0748624244 | 192 pages | PDF | 1,1 Mb Mark Currie brings together theoretical and philosophical ideas about time in his analysis of anticipation and other forms of projection into the future. In the work of such writers as Ali Smith, Ian McEwan, Martin Amis, and Graham Swift, he considers "prolepsis" or "flashforward," in which a character experiences the present as the object of a future memory, and outlines a set of questions about tense and temporal reference that redefines the function of stories in contemporary culture. He also revisits traditional questions about the difference between literature and philosophy in relation to knowledge of time.

Matter and Motion
|

James Clerk Maxwell, Sir Joseph Larmor “Matter and Motion" Cosimo Classics | 2007-10-15 | ISBN: 1602068534 | 184 pages | Djvu | 2,1 Mb This slim yet dense volume remains an excellent introduction to Newtonian physics, just as when it was first published in 1877. Beginning with the basics of physical science and working his way steadily up to universal gravitation, Maxwell surveys late-19th-century physics in his clear and concise style. Matter and Motion addresses: . motion . force . the properties of the center of mass of a material system . work and energy . recapitulation . the pendulum and gravity . the equations of motion of a connected system Readers from the science historian to the high school physics student will come away from Matter and Motion with a deeper understanding of the roots of modern physics. Scottish physicist and mathematician JAMES CLERK MAXWELL (1831-1879) is considered by many to be one of the giants of theoretical physics. Albert Einstein once described Maxwell's work as "the most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton." A devoutly religious man and a published poet as well as a renowned scientist, Maxwell's books include Theory of Heat (1870), Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (1873), and Elementary Treatise on Electricity (1881).
