Sharing knowledge: innovations and remaining challenges

Sharing knowledge: innovations and remaining challenges
The World Bank | 2003 | ISBN 0821357123 | English |124Pages | PDF | 2.2 MB

In 1996, the World Bank made a commitment to become a global knowledge bank. The Bank’s stated intention was to develop a world-class knowledge management system and to improve and expand the sharing of development knowledge with clients and partners. The objectives of this commitment were to improve the quality of Bank operations and enhance the capacity of clients to achieve development results.

Since FY97, the Bank has spent some US$220 million for corporate, network, and Regional knowledge-sharing activities and more than US$60 million for its three main global knowledge initiatives, the Development Gateway, the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN), and the Global Development Network (GDN). These programs and activities have sparked a lot of innovation, with potentially significant benefits for the scaling up of effective Bank interventions and for empowering clients to improve development outcomes. But new knowledge-sharing programs and activities need to be much better integrated into the Bank’s core business processes to achieve the initiative’s broad objectives. For this, senior management must provide greater strategic direction and oversight to corporate, network, and Regional units.

Customs Modernization Handbook

Customs Modernization Handbook
The World Bank | 2005 | ISBN 0821357514 | English | 356 pages | PDF | 3.38 MB

This handbook aims to make a positive contribution to the efforts that many countries are undertaking to modernize their customs administrations. The handbook views a competent and well-organized customs service as one that successfully balances its various responsibilities to ensure a high level of compliance with revenue objectives and regulatory requirements while at the same time intervening as little as possible in the legitimate movement of goods and people across borders.

The handbook recognizes that conditions differ greatly across countries, so that each customs administration will need to tailor its modernization efforts to national objectives, implementation capacities, and resource availability.

Nevertheless, meeting the modernization objectives will most likely require the adoption of the core principles discussed in this handbook: adequate use of intelligence and reliance on risk management; optimal use of information and communications technology (ICT); effective partnership with the private sector, including programs to improve compliance; increased cooperation with other border control agencies; and transparency through information on laws, regulations, and administrative guidelines.

Five for the Future: Roadmap for Competitiveness in the 21st Century

Five for the Future: Roadmap for Competitiveness in the 21st Century
Council on Competitiveness | 2007 | ISBN 1889866369 | English | 34 pages | PDF | 1 MB

Five for the Future is a Call to Action. In this hyper-competitive, rapidly changing environment, it is only prudent to glance in the rear view mirror from time to time. But America needs more than rear view mirror policies. The United States needs a roadmap for success in the global economy—one that charts a strategic direction between complacency and panic. And the time to act is now, when the U.S. margin of leadership is strong.

Our success will, in large measure, be built on our ability to understand how the game has changed and respond with a new set of strategies and capabilities:

* Lead in research discoveries that promise to create whole new industries and markets
* Build on knowledge and technology fusions that have the capacity to transform products and services
* Provide every American with the tools to compete in the global economy
* Develop risk intelligence and resilience in an age of turbulence
* Extract value by being a first mover in addressing global challenges

This demands an environment that supports innovation in all its forms and anticipates the new dynamics that create competitive advantages for robust risk management and productivity-enhancing approaches to sustainability. It offers a framework for policy makers, presidential candidates, private sector decision makers and others to move forward decisively to secure America’s competitive future.

Java Open Source Programming: with XDoclet, JUnit, WebWork, Hibernate

Java Open Source Programming: with XDoclet, JUnit, WebWork, Hibernate by Joseph Walnes (Author), Ara Abrahamian (Author), Mike Cannon-Brookes (Author), Patrick A. Lightbody (Author)
Publisher: Wiley (November 28, 2003) | ISBN-10: 0471463620 | PDF | 2 Mb | 480 pages

The Java language itself is not strictly open-source (Sun has held onto control, albeit with lots of public input). There is, however, a large open-source development community around this highly capable language. Java Open Source Programming describes and provides tutorials on some of the most interesting public Java projects, and is designed to enable a Java programmer (who\'s worked through the basic language\'s initial learning curve) to take on more ambitious assignments.

The authors generally treat the covered open-source packages as resources to be used, rather than projects to be contributed to, and so it\'s fair to think of this volume as the \"missing manual\" for downloaded code. In that spirit, the authors devote many sections to \"how to\" subjects (addressing, for example, a good way to retrieve stored objects from a database and the procedure for calling an action in XWork).
Java Open Source Programming takes a bit of a risk by devoting a lot of space to the development of a complex application (an online pet shop), as such a didactic strategy can be hard to follow. The authors pull it off, though, and manage to show that their covered technologies can be used to create a feature-rich and robust application that uses the versatile model-view-controller (MVC) pattern. This book will suit you well if you\'re planning an MVC Java project and want to take advantage of open-source packages. --David Wall
Topics covered: The most popular open-source Java packages, particularly those concerned with Web applications and the model-view-controller (MVC) pattern. Specific packages covered include JUnit and Mocks (code testing), Hibernate (persistent storage of objects in databases), WebWork (MVC), SiteMesh (Web page layout), Lucene (site searching), and WebDoclet (configuration file generation).

Mining Google Web Services: Building Applications with the Google API

Mining Google Web Services: Building Applications with the Google API by John Paul Mueller (Author), Sybex (Author)
Publisher: Sybex; 1 edition (April 23, 2004) | ISBN-10: 0782143334 | PDF | 16 Mb | 384 pages

Virtually everyone sees Google as, hands down, the best online search tool. Now you can use and improve on Google technology in your own applications.
Mining Google Web Services teaches you dozens of techniques for tapping the power of the Google API. Google already gives you fine-grained control over your search criteria, and this book shows you how to exert the same control in your own focused search and analysis applications.

With just a little knowledge of JavaScript, VBA, Visual Studio 6, Visual Studio .NET, PHP, or Java, you will get better (and more relevant) search results--faster and more easily. Here\'s a little of what you\'ll find covered inside:
— Improving the speed and accuracy of searches — Performing data mining across the Internet — Using Google Web Services to search a single website — Building search applications for mobile devices — Using caching techniques to improve application performance and reliability — Analyzing Google data — Creating searches for users with special needs — Discovering new uses for Google — Obtaining historical data using cached pages — Performing spelling checks on any text — Reducing the number of false search hits
Whether your goal is to improve your own searches or share specialized search capabilities with others, this is the one resource that will see you through the job from start to finish.

Peter Freund “A Passion for Discovery"
World Scientific Publishing Company | 2007-08-14 | ISBN: 9812706461 | 240 pages | PDF | 1,4 Mb

This fascinating book assembles human stories about physicists and mathematicians. Remarkably, these stories cluster around some general themes having to do with the interaction between scientists, and with the impact of historic events such as the advent of fascism and communism in the twentieth century on scientists behavior. Briefly, but lucidly, some of the beautiful science that brought these scientists together in the first place is explained.
