Try some colour therapy
Digital cameras offer today's photographer incredible flexibility. No more carrying two or more SLR bodies loaded with different film stocks, or a bag of colour correction filters to counterbalance unwanted colour shifts in different lighting conditions (well, you can still carry filters more on that later). You can now add colour, take it away, make it subtle, make it vivid, make it colder, make it warmer all in a matter of seconds using a single camera. To create unforgettable images though, you still need to understand the basics of colour theory. You need the ability to judge the colour of light and a knowledge of when you're camera's going to get it wrong.

This book gives you all the information you need to start taking more control of your photography. We show you exactly why certain colours combined in a single frame can be used to increase the power of your shots, while others can turn perfectly composed, beautifully exposed photographs into painful viewing experiences. Youll also find a useful guide to Photoshop's colour enhancement tools towards the back of the back see what can happen when you go to extremes...

Digital Camera Magazine Complete Photography Guide: Master Exposure

Digital Camera Magazine Complete Photography Guide: Master Exposure

Contents

Adjusting exposure
When things get tricky
Master of exposure: Ansel Adams
Background problems
Unusual lighting
Master of exposure: Galen Rowell
How to read a histogram
Controlling the dynamic range
Using a neutral density grad
Master of exposure: P-l Hermansen
Low light exposures
High key/low key
Top 10 tips

Use your grey matter
The biggest advantage digital has over film is the fact that you can check your shot once you've taken it. You can bring up a histogram to check the brightness range of a scene and make sure you're not underexposing or overexposing it. You can, if your camera allows, switch on a flashing highlight to show you any blown highlights where detail will be lost in your photograph. You can then change your exposure accordingly. And if all that fails to produce the balanced exposure you want, you can go some way to rectifying it while image-editing.

It is, however good to get things right first time to produce a high-quality image in-camera which you only have to do minimal tweaking with later. This book arms you with practical advice for getting the exposures you want, and the confidence to take control when the camera's being fooled. We've got clear examples of when this can happen and what you should do. We also show you the inspiring work of three master photographers to give you an idea of you what can be achieved once you've nailed the basics which start on page 10

A Dictionary of Chinese Characters

A Dictionary of Chinese Characters

# Publisher: Routledge; 1 edition (July 10, 2008)
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 0415460476
# ISBN-13: 978-0415460477

By arranging frequently used characters under the phonetic element they have in common, rather than only
under their radical, the dictionary encourages the student to link characters according to their phonetic. The
system of cross-referencing then allows the student to find easily all the characters in the dictionary which
have the same phonetic element, thus helping to fix in the memory the link between a character and its sound
and meaning.

More controversially, the book aims to alleviate the confusion that similar looking characters
can cause by printing them alongside each other. All characters are given in both their
traditional and simplified forms.

Appendix one clarifies the choice of characters listed whilst the second appendix provides a list
of the radicals with detailed comments on usage. The dictionary has a full pinyin and radical index.

This innovative resource will be an excellent study-aid for students with a basic grasp of Chinese,
whether they are studying with a teacher or learning on their own.

'The whole thrust of the work is that it is more helpful to learners of Chinese characters
to see them in terms of sound, than in visual terms. It is a radical, provocative and constructive idea.
The book would be ideal for teachers of Chinese language and for students beyond elementary level,
as well as for anyone learning on their own.'

A-Z of Careers and Jobs

A-Z of Careers and Jobs

# Publisher: Kogan Page; 15th Edition edition (3 April 2008)
# Language English
# ISBN-10: 0749452552
# ISBN-13: 978-0749452551

Choice can be daunting or desirable, marvellous or muddling. What helps a confusing plethora of options to
become a wealth of exciting opportunities is clear information upon which to base your choices. At present
the job market is relatively buoyant and there are plenty of pathways from which to choose. Education and
training and training options are perhaps the most extensive they have ever been. All this is, of course, good
news, but it does mean that anyone entering the employment market at whatever level must undertake
considerable research. It is also true that having plenty to choose from does not mean that every choice is easy.
Much of the job market, for example work in the media, is fiercely competitive.

This guide will help you access all the information you need to inform your decision making. It is useful whether
you are at the stage where you think you know what you want, but would like to check entry requirements, or
whether you just want to flick through to give yourself some ideas. If you really are unsure where to begin, flick
through some of the ‘Personal Qualities and Skills’ sections to see what matches your experience and ambitions.
If you read a ‘Qualifications and Training’ section and are in any doubt as to whether you have what is required,
check directly with an employer, a course provider or a relevant professional body. The information on salaries
can only be a guide, because different types of employer have different types of salary structure. The Info panels
at the end of each career entry will lead you to a wealth of sources of further information. Websites are especially
useful, providing details of training, education and vacancy sources and linking you to further sources of information.

Digital Texturing & Painting

Digital Texturing & Painting

# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 0735709181
# ISBN-13: 978-0735709188

If you are involved in the world of 3D in any way—or even if you're simply a student of art and design
theory—please take a look at this book. It's an amazing piece of work, exploring the theory and practice
of applying texturing maps and paint effects to models and scenes. Yet somehow that doesn't do the
book justice, possibly because author Owen Demers grounds his discussion in such solid fundamental
ground that the book comes off as equal parts museum catalog, art school text, and industry profile.
Face it, most 3D students and professionals have limited skill sets in art theory; yet these people are
expected to turn out ever-higher quality work to keep up with audience expectations. We're beyond the
days of dancing gasoline pumps... the release of Final Fantasy signals a new benchmark for mass-audience
expectations of realistic quality in 3D. Want to know how to do this stuff right? Check out [digital] Texturing
& Painting. Each edition of the New Riders [digital] series addresses a distinct discipline: Character Animation;
Lighting & Rendering; and now Texturing & Painting (editions on modeling, compositing, and more are in
development). What makes Owen Demers such an expert? He's the guy behind the incredible surface texturing
in Bingo, the proof-of-concept digital short made with Alias|Wavefront's Maya when it first released. I still remember
people walking out of the theatre at SIGGRAPH shaking their heads in disbelief after seeing the hair, the pores on
the skin of the characters... "How did they DO that?" Owen teaches you what you need to know before you fire up
your software.
