"Those who think that mathematicians are cold, mechanical proving machines will do well to read Hellman's book on conflicts in mathematics. The main characters are as excitable and touchy as the next man. But Hellman's stories also show how scientific fights bring out sharper formulations and better arguments." The Calculus Wars: Newton, Leibniz, and the Greatest Mathematical Clash of All Time
|

The Calculus Wars: Newton, Leibniz, and the Greatest Mathematical Clash of All Time Thunder's Mouth Press| ISBN: 1560257067 | 2006-04-03 | PDF | 288 pages | 3 Mb
Now regarded as the bane of many college students’ existence, calculus was one of the most important mathematical innovations of the seventeenth century. But a dispute over its discovery sewed the seeds of discontent between two of the greatest scientific giants of all time — Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
Today Newton and Leibniz are generally considered the twin independent inventors of calculus, and they are both credited with giving mathematics its greatest push forward since the time of the Greeks. Had they known each other under different circumstances, they might have been friends. But in their own lifetimes, the joint glory of calculus was not enough for either and each declared war against the other, openly and in secret.
This long and bitter dispute has been swept under the carpet by historians — perhaps because it reveals Newton and Leibniz in their worst light — but The Calculus Wars tells the full story in narrative form for the first time. This vibrant and gripping scientific potboiler ultimately exposes how these twin mathematical giants were brilliant, proud, at times mad and, in the end, completely human.

Descartes' Cogito: Saved from the Great Shipwreck
|
|
Husain Sarkar, “Descartes' Cogito: Saved from the Great Shipwreck" Cambridge University Press | 2003-03-10 | ISBN: 0521821665 | 326 pages | PDF | 1,6 Mb Perhaps the most famous proposition in the history of philosophy is Descartes' cogito "I think therefore I am". Husain Sarkar claims in this provocative new interpretation of Descartes that the ancient tradition of reading the cogito as an argument is mistaken. It should, he says, be read as an intuition. Through this new interpretative lens, Sarkar reconsiders key Cartesian topics. He demonstrates how Descartes' attempt to prove the existence of God is foiled by a new Cartesian Circle.

Counterinsurgency in Iraq (2003-2006)
|

Counterinsurgency in Iraq (2003-2006) RAND Corporation | 2008 | ISBN 9780833042972 | English | PDF | 136 pages | 1 MB This monograph outlines strategic considerations relative to counterinsurgency campaigns; presents an overview of the current conflict in Iraq, focusing on counterinsurgency; analyzes counterinsurgency operations in Iraq; presents conclusions about counterinsurgency, based on the U.S. experience in Iraq; describes implications from that experience for future counterinsurgency operations; and offers recommendations to improve the ability of the U.S. government to conduct counterinsurgency in the future. For example, U.S. counterinsurgency experience in Iraq has revealed the need to achieve synergy and balance among several simultaneous civilian and military efforts and the need to continually address and reassess the right indicators to determine whether current strategies are adequate. The need to continually reassess counterinsurgency strategy and tactics implies that military and civilian leaders must have not only the will, but also a formal mechanism, to fearlessly and thoroughly call to the attention of senior decisionmakers any shortfalls in policies and practices, e.g., in Iraq, failure to protect the civilian population, as well as overreliance on technological approaches to counterinsurgency. The Iraq experience is particularly germane to drawing lessons about counterinsurgency. In essence, the conflict there is a local political power struggle overlaid with sectarian violence and fueled by fanatical foreign jihadists and criminal opportunists — a combination of factors likely to be replicated in insurgencies elsewhere.

As a consultant I was hired to review and evaluate eight of the top selling PMP Exam Preparation books for their accuracy in following the PMBOK® Guide - Third Edition. I have developed and taught a PMP Exam Prep course for a leading R.E.P., and taught PMP Exam preparation classes for PMI Chapters. I can honestly say that Head First PMP is by far the best PMP Exam Preparation book of all I have reviewed in depth. It is the very best basic education and training book that I have read that presents the processes for managing a project, which makes it a great resource for a basic project management class for beginners as well as a tool for practitioners who want to pass the PMP exam. THE SHADOW OF THE DALAI LAMA - Sexuality, Magic and Politics in Tibetan Buddhism
|

THE SHADOW OF THE DALAI LAMA - Sexuality, Magic and Politics in Tibetan Buddhism Victor und Victoria Trimondi | Translated by Mark Penny | 2003 | PDF | 553 pages | 3 Mb
This is Victor and Victoria Trimondi's groundbreaking book The Shadow of the Dalai Lama - Sexuality, Magic and Politics in Tibetan Buddhism (2003) which exposes in detail the cultic background of Tibetan Buddhism and its clerical leader, the Dalai Lama. In this original work of analysis, interpretation and critique, the authors not only provide surprising, previously largely ignored factual information but also undertake a philosophically well-grounded interpretation of Lamaism, rendering the Tibetan-Buddhist worldview understandable for Western readers through a comparison with European religious traditions. V. and V. Trimondi have succeeded in combining history, politics, religion and psychology in an impressive cultural-historical presentation. They have paid particular attention to rendering Tibetan culture understandable to “laypeople” who have not dealt with it before. This study measures up to all the criteria of a classic reference text and could well be described as a seminal work on the topic. Despite numerous initial calls for a boycott by the pro-Lamaist wing, the book has led to a fierce, ever-expanding discussion, and has in the meantime become a standard work on the critical examination of Lamaism and the metapolitics of the Dalai Lama. Politicians, journalists, artists, theologians - no one who deals with the Dalai Lama and his religion will be able to ignore the facts and arguments in this sensational yet sound study, today representing a standard critique of Tibetan Buddhism. Find out all about the cult of the "charismatic" Dalai Lama and how does he magically enchant millions of believers all over the world to follow him blindly. 585 pages, some pictures. A must read for everyone.

The Culture of Terrorism

The Culture of Terrorism Pluto Press | ISBN: 074530270X | 1987-01-01 | PDF | 304 pages | 4 Mb
It has become impossible to write a review of a Chomsky piece without focusing a large content of the review on Chomsky himself (witness ... slew of one-star versus five-star reviews of all his books, which often feature personal opinion rather than genuine, responsible argument). Being something of a free-thinker with an interest in politics and psychology, I've understandably been drawn toward the debate surrounding Chomsky and his stunning claims about the nature of Western (usually US) policy -- and have been very disappointed with the childish nature of that debate, as it has declined hopelessly toward name-calling and a ridiculous skewing of facts and quotes. How does a person know who to believe? (I should reiterate that it really has become a case of "who", not "what", as if the merit of an argument has anything to do with its author.)

Inside Arthur Andersen: Shifting Values, Unexpected Consequences
|

Susan E. Squires, Cynthia J. Smith, Lorna McDougall, William R. Yeack “Inside Arthur Andersen: Shifting Values, Unexpected Consequences" FT Press | 2003-06-12 | ISBN: 0131408968 | 208 pages | PDF | 1,2 Mb Reader's review: I never thought about the thousands of people all over the world who conscientiously practised their profession but were brought down by a series of scandals by people they never knew working in offices they never dealt with. This book is the fall of Arthur Andersen from their point of view. It details the history of Arthur Andersen from its founding until the end and tries to makes sense of what happened. They do a powerful job, making the reader sensitve to the size and corporate culture of Andersen and explaining how changes in the company to accomodate the changing demand for audit services opened the door to this kind of thing to happen. If you couple reading this book with books about Enron itself, you will definitely be feeling that only the people in Anderson involved in the scandal should have been brought down. That being said, they do leave in the "smoking guns" - the former scandals that had caused the SEC to say basically, "One more time and your dead" to Andersen. Enron was the one more time. Still, this book made me think that there might have been a better way of handling it.
