Without Warning (1994)

This film used "The War of the Worlds" radiocast as a format. Sander Vanocur and Bree Walker played themselves doing a newscast of an series of events. Several other reporters played themselves as well. This film also featured a pre "Malcolm in the Middle" Jane Kaczmarek as an expert commentator and a pre "Q" (Star Trek) John de Lancie as a field reporter. I remember that CBS ran notices that what we were seeing was not real at every commecial break. This film is fun and a little thought provoking: do we make sure we understand what we are responding to before we respond?

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

Great acting, great story, and totally unpredictable. I can't believe it when people say things like 'the writers must've seen Donnie Darko and ripped it off" when the script was written and passed around Hollywood YEARS BEFORE Donnie Darko came out. There's so much garbage out there that I found this to be utterly refreshing from the watered down, uber predictable Hollywood fare that's been flooding our theaters.

Caddyshack (1980)

Sporting superb comedic talent and the best darned sight gag in all of cinema, CADDYSHACK is roll-on-the-floor funny. Watching this classic is an event: it's an ice-down-the-beer-and-invite-your-buddies-over celebration. Forget the plot; simply sit back and let director Harold Ramis take you on a 90-minute knee-slapping ride. Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, and Bill Murray are exceptional, but crude and rude Rodney Dangerfield most effectively captains the CADDYSHACK boat. But let's give kudos to ALL of the characters--this was a great cast, from top to bottom. Two of my favorite minor characters included Spaulding (John F. Barmon Jr.), the whiny, nose-picking nephew of Judge Smails; and "The Bishop" (Henry Wilcoxen), who has quite the ontological ephiphany during a robust round of golf. CADDYSHACK has it all: the "snobs vs. slobs," beer, booze, crude pranks, one-liners, pratfalls, adolescent humor, great Kenny Loggins music--even a wacky gopher. Oh, and did I mention golf? Think I'll cancel today's round and call up some buddies.

Ladder 49 (2004)

From the very first we are immersed in explosive scenes as watch Jack Morrison (Joaquin Phoenix), a well trained fire fighter is disregarding his own peril as he saves a man from the burning high-rise building. The inevitable happens and Jack is trapped in the burning debris. As his comrades rush to save him the rest of the film is a series of flash-backs from his rooky days until the present. The story focus is on Jack Morrison's life and secondarily firefighting in general. Captain Mike Kennedy (John Travolta) holds the team together. John Travolta is believable in the film. This is a fantastic movie - really tugs at the heart strings!

Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

What can anyone say about a no-holds barred Nick Cage movie with fast cars, faster women, and non-stop pyrotechnics other than the fact that it fairly rocks? While surely not providing any ostensible grist for Academy Award nominations, other than perhaps for best special effects with all the car sequences, and some imaginative chase set-ups and scenes, this is a strictly by-the-numbers action flick, meant to appeal to the young set, and still appeal to old guys like me who enjoy a pleasant evening away from the "sturm und drang' of everyday life. All that said, I really did enjoy watching the movie, although I had no doubt as to the resolution of the existential dilemma presented to Nick, given the fact he is the most worthy of the anti-heroes in recent memory, a good "bad" guy we root for from the very start. And he does have a special woman, (no, not the sexy Angelina Jolie, although she is sweet indeed) by the way of his special personal vehicle, a super-charge mustang he refers to by name, and seems to have male-female kind of bond with. The supporting cast here is terrific, from Robert Duvall to Will Patton and many, many others, all of whom contribute to a tight, entertaining, and eminently enjoyable ride of a lifetime.

A League Of Their Own (1992)

The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall does a fine job of establishing a colourful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball!

Young Frankenstein (1974)

This is an absolutely mind-blowing, hilarious piece of work. Gene Wilder is excellent as the "young" Dr. Frankenstein. I liked everyone else, and Peter Boyle was very funny. Teri Garr was good, especially when we first see her 'rolling in the hay.' Young Frankenstein is one of my favourite comedies. Not only a favourite comedy, but one of my favourite movies. A great experience and is very very funny. Gene Wilder is great and so is Martin Feldman as Igor, but its that damn Gene Hackman cameo as the blindman which is the funniest sceen in the movie. Nicely shot in black and white. I cant imagine though Peter Boyle (the monster) as being really hung, I know its a movie but why Peter Boyle huh. Anyway, its a great Mel Brooks film next to Blazing Saddles and SpaceBalls. Gotta love that Igor!

Slapshot (1977)

What more can be said about a movie that endures despite its old age and that stars the Great Paul Newman next to a bunch of no-name minor hockey- rejects? Not much but this 1977 classic is definitely a keeper for anyone who likes either hockey, Paul Newman or just plain having a roar of a time while watching a film. This hilarious portrayal of the grind of minor league sports has become a must-see! Newman is fantastic as the old geezer whose best days are behind him and who can't really get a grip on what to do once his days on the ice come to an end. His handsome yet vulnerable looks are perfect for the role and is performance is so affable and low-key that you barely notice that a superstar walks among the rest of this cast.

Though the original Fletch was drubbed by critics, it proved a major success for star Chevy Chase. So once more, Chase stars as Irwin Maurice "Fletch" Fletcher, the gonzo investigative reporter created by novelist Gregory McDonald. Indulging his penchant for disguises and bizarre aliases, Fletch investigates a deep dark mystery at a crumbling Southern plantation and in the process, plays 6 characters. Various friends and enemies are portrayed con brio by Hal Holbrook, Cleavon Little, Juliane Phillips, Randall "Tex" Cobb, Richard Libertini and Richard Belzer.

Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, Los Angeles journalist, really lives for his profession. As Jane Doe, he publishes articles that have caused several heads to roll in the past. Now, Fletch is at it again: In disguise as a bum, he lives at the beach, researching drugs and their dealing. One day, Fletch is addressed by Alan Stanwyk, a rich man, who asks him, the bum, a favour. For the sum of $50,000, Fletch should kill poor cancer-ridden Mr. Stanwyk with a gun, so that his wife will get the insurance money. What the guy didn't think of was Fletch's real profession. Returning into normal life, Fletch instantly takes up research not only to find out that Mr. Stanwyk is healthy as life itself but he also runs into certain connections between drug dealing at the beach, Alan Stanwyk, his private jet, the police and a very expensive piece of Land in Utah.
